FedEx Plants 2,000 Trees in the Sierra Madre
To combat deforestation and support local livelihoods, more than 100 FedEx volunteers collaborated with the GreenEarth Foundation to plant 2,000 resilient malunggay trees across 5,000 square meters in San Miguel, Bulacan.
Express transportation company Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) marked Earth Month 2026 with a tree-planting initiative in the Sierra Madre, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and reforestation.
On April 11, 2026, more than 100 FedEx volunteers collaborated with the GreenEarth Foundation to plant 2,000 malunggay (moringa) trees in San Miguel, Bulacan, covering an estimated 5,000 square meters.
Native to the Philippines, the malunggay tree was selected for its resilience, rapid growth, and nutritional and environmental benefits, making it ideal for long-term forest restoration and community livelihood support.
“Environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility,” said Maribeth Espinosa, managing director of FedEx Philippines, in an April 16 press statement. “Through volunteering, our team members are helping rebuild forest cover, support biodiversity, and strengthen the natural ecosystem that helps surrounding communities thrive.”

What is the impact of deforestation in the Philippines?
A total of 1.42 million hectares of tree cover was lost from 2001 to 2022 in the Philippines, representing a 7.6% decrease in the country’s total tree cover of about 18.684 million hectares. This loss, as reported by Climate Change Commission in March 2024, contributed to 848 metric tons of C02 emissions.
According to the Global Forest Watch’s latest data, a total of 459 million hectares of tree cover were lost globally from 2001 to 2022, resulting in a 12% decrease, which led to the emission of 195 billion tons of C02.
Excess C02 acts like a thermal blanket that traps heat, leading to extreme weather and rising sea levels that threaten coastal cities and food security.
Reforestation efforts help restore vegetation, prevent soil degradation, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for surrounding communities.

Frequently Asked Questions
FedEx aimed to combat deforestation and support community livelihoods by planting 2,000 malunggay trees in the Sierra Madre. This effort helps restore forest cover and strengthens the natural ecosystem in Bulacan.
Malunggay was selected for its rapid growth, resilience, and nutritional benefits. As a native species, it is ideal for long-term reforestation and provides sustainable livelihood opportunities for local residents.
Between 2001 and 2022, the Philippines lost 1.42 million hectares of tree cover, a 7.6% decrease. This loss resulted in 848 metric tons of CO2 emissions, contributing to extreme weather.
Over 100 volunteers participated to demonstrate that environmental care is a shared responsibility. Their active involvement helps rebuild biodiversity and reinforces FedEx’s commitment to long-term sustainability and climate action.
Reforestation restores vegetation that absorbs excess CO2, preventing it from acting as a “thermal blanket.” This process stabilizes local temperatures, prevents soil degradation, and protects coastal cities from rising sea levels.
