Grab Philippines has become a force for change and a valuable contributor to the economy through the company’s services across mobility, delivery, food and more. And as a company that provides employment to tens of thousands of drivers and riders, its public affairs group has become an important part of what Grab does and how it is driving a revolution in mobility. How does public affairs help to achieve this?

“We foster synergies with the government and with our public sector actors so that we could drive positive socioeconomic impact across the Philippines,” Booey Bonifacio, Grab Philippines’ Director of Public Affairs explains, “particularly in areas or communities that we operate in.”

It is all about being the champion of the people in Grab’s communities. “Empowering people entails knowing and understanding the pain points and needs of our communities—it requires us to be intensively involved,” Bonifacio says.

Public affairs was front and center during the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming instrumental in shifting Grab drivers to its food business. “During the pandemic, the company was able to stay resilient thanks to the GrabFood business,” Bonifacio adds. “As we served the needs of consumers restricted to the confines of their homes, we were also able to provide a viable livelihood to our delivery-partners.”

Bonifacio also led the appeal to the government to allow some driver-partners to operate as delivery-partners, cushioning the impact of the pandemic on their livelihood as mobility was in a standstill.

“We leveraged our relationship with the government to collaborate in sustaining the livelihood of our driver-partners during those difficult times. And we are grateful that our partners from the public sector listened.”
