Canva Adopts Internet Slang With “Chronically Online” Language Mode
Canva’s new language mode allows prompts that use online slang.
In the past, using technology meant learning how machines talk through code, commands, and keyboard shortcuts. This dynamic shifted through the combined influence of social media, algorithms, and group chats. Online slang now shapes how people communicate both in their personal lives and at work.
“Chronically Online”
With prompts like “main character energy” becoming increasingly common, Canva recognizes that the way people speak online can be a functional and familiar shortcut that leads to creativity.
The visual design platform is introducing a product experience called the “Chronically Online” mode in English. This language style is inspired by the lingo of the Internet-native generation, and transforms every button, tooltip, and AI chat into Internet vocabulary.
It is also introducing a collection of online templates with more easter eggs to discover.

Gen Zs will make up about 30% of the U.S. workforce by 2030, and they’ve adopted Canva as their personal and professional platform of choice. This allows the company a view of how Internet culture shapes their creative process.
Language shaped by a mix of online subcultures and communities influences not only mainstream culture, but also how people communicate and collaborate daily. Terms like “slay” (up 98%), “rizz” (up 88%), and “spill the tea” (up 47%), for instance, saw an increase in user searches in 2025.
Today, Canva supports its 260 million monthly users in more than 100 languages, including in Chronically Online mode.
To access the new mode, open Settings, find the Language section, and then select English (chronically online).
