Evolving lifestyles and shifting social norms are driving consumers to products like nicotine pouches that minimize disruption and adapt to their environment.

Nicotine alternatives have entered the picture as Filipino consumers become more mindful of their routines and environments. Cigarettes, long the most familiar format, are now accompanied by products such as nicotine pouches that provide discretion, flexibility, and convenience.

Established in markets like Sweden, Norway, and the UK, nicotine pouches are small, tobacco leaf-free products that complement traditional habits and reshape how people include nicotine into their lifestyles.

In the Philippines, rising urbanization, evolving lifestyles, and a growing desire for options non-disruptive in social or professional environments are shaping consumer interest.

Nordic Spirit, a nicotine pouch brand owned by international tobacco company Japan Tobacco International (JTI), was the first oral nicotine pouch brand introduced into the local market in 2023.

“Filipinos today are looking for choices that adapt to them, not the other way around,” said Karin Tan, JTI category director for Reduced Risk Products. “Nordic Spirit was created to seamlessly fit into those moments—whether you’re working, commuting, or catching up with friends—without disrupting your flow.”

Nationwide reach

Nordic Spirit has expanded to select channels nationwide since its Cebu debut in 2023, reaching consumers through convenience stores, e-commerce sites, and sari-sari stores.

The product comes in two new flavors: Lush Crimson and Green Forest. The former delivers vibrant flavors with a gentle tang, while the latter brings a rush of mint.

The introduction of its three-piece packet format also offers accessibility to first-time users and those seeking smaller, more flexible options.

These developments mirror global trends in Sweden, Norway, the UK, and the US, where nicotine pouches have gained ground through innovation, accessibility, and cultural resonance.  Nordic Spirit’s progress reflects the same factors present in the Philippines, where consumers want choices that fit better with their lifestyles.

The nicotine pouches, according to JTI, are an innovation not only in product design but also in how these options are introduced and made available in everyday spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

The growth is driven by rapid urbanization, evolving professional lifestyle workflows, and an expanding consumer demand for non-combustible alternatives in smoke-free environments. These public spaces heavily restrict traditional smoking or vaping, steering consumer habits toward smoke-free and odor-free formats.

JTI Philippines secured its first-mover position by introducing Nordic Spirit in 2023, establishing the country as the initial market in Asia to permit regulated oral nicotine pouch distribution under Republic Act No. 11900. This early placement has allowed the firm to scale distribution networks and capture early consumer loyalty ahead of traditional competitors.

To align with domestic purchasing preferences and ensure price accessibility, the brand introduced a specialized, cost-effective three-piece packet format alongside standard larger tins. This structural retail option allows first-time consumers to sample distinct flavors, like Lush Crimson and Green Forest, without high upfront monetary outlays.

Production is backed by global supply chain networks, shifting from regional facilities in Poland to modern manufacturing plants located in Vårgårda, Sweden. These highly optimized facilities utilize an Integrated Work System (IWS) powered by 100% renewable energy to scale export capacities for expanding international markets, including Canada, France, and the Philippines.

The primary differentiator lies in the underlying material composition: traditional Swedish snus utilizes processed, pasteurized tobacco leaves as its primary delivery matrix, whereas modern oral nicotine pouches are completely free of tobacco leaves. Instead, they incorporate white, plant-based fibers infused with pure extracted nicotine and food-grade flavorings.
