Using Design to Celebrate Meaningful Relationships
People are using design to celebrate meaningful relationships of all kinds on Valentine’s Day.
Data from Canva, a graphic design tool, show that people now use Valentine’s Day to celebrate not only romance, but also friendships, chosen family, and the other relationships that shape everyday life.
Over the past year, global searches for “Valentine’s Day” and “Valentines” exceeded 412 million, highlighting the scale of love-centered creativity across cards, social posts, invitations, and more within the platform. Interest in the holiday also continued to grow, with Valentine’s Day searches up 31% compared to 2024.
This growth, according to Canva, reflects how people choose to engage with the moment: using creativity to make familiar Valentine’s rituals feel more personal and intentional.
‘Galentine’s Day’
Alongside romantic traditions, Valentine’s season is becoming a moment to celebrate friendship.
Galentine’s Day is turning friendship celebrations into themed gatherings shaped by shared aesthetics. This shift is seen in how Canva’s community creates, with global searches for “Galentine’s Day” and “Galentines” exceeding 8.6 million in 2025, and interest surging 207% compared to the year before.

Shared connection
In an era where attention is scarce, cultural moments that invite true participation matter more.
Designing cards, social posts, and shareable visuals were once reserved for full-time creators, but this has shifted into a part of how everyday moments are marked.
The evolution of both Valentine’s and Galentine’s points to a change in behavior, Canva said, as people use established moments like February 14 to acknowledge a wider circle and recognize shared connection.
