Annette Gozon-Valdes learned to take a step back after surviving a stroke during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Annette Gozon-Valdes is no stranger to stress as president and CEO of GMA Films, Inc. After suffering a stroke during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, she realized that nothing mattered more than her health. It was a realization that shifted her perspective.

She's only had one major health issue in the 25 years she's been at the company, she told The Business Manual.

"During the pandemic, there was a work issue that really stressed me out and then I got a stroke," she said in a February 13 Google Meet interview.

"I attribute that stroke to stress from that particular work issue. Luckily, there were no lingering effects and I was able to overcome it," she said, attributing her recovery to God's protection.

"It taught me to be more chill. It's just work. Nothing is more important than a person's health or wellbeing."

A stroke is also known as a "brain attack," a term that emphasizes that the brain is dying due to a lack of blood flow. High stress levels, as well as working long hours, are two of its risk factors.

Women have a higher lifetime risk of having a stroke.

Her leadership approach nowadays is tempered with patience, kindness, and collaboration, as her work style matures alongside her faith as a Christian leader.

"Whereas before little things would really stress me out and put me in panic mode, now I'm more chill because as a Christian, God said do not worry, just trust in him," she said.

Everything has already been planned, "so when stressful moments confront me, I lift them up to the Lord, do my best, and siya na bahala (let him take over)."

She shares her favorite prayer:

Praising God for all that He is and has done

Thanking Him for the blessings He has given and continues to give

Laying on His feet all my worries and troubles for He is always sovereign

Frequently Asked Questions

After suffering a stroke triggered by work-related stress during the pandemic, the GMA Films CEO shifted toward a "more chill" and patient leadership style. She realized that no professional issue is more important than personal health and well-being. This perspective is heavily influenced by her faith, leading her to prioritize kindness, collaboration, and trusting in a higher plan rather than reacting with panic to daily stressors.

A stroke, or "brain attack," occurs when the brain is deprived of blood flow. In high-stakes corporate environments, the primary risk factors include high stress levels and working long hours. Statistics also indicate that women have a higher lifetime risk of experiencing a stroke, making stress management a critical component of executive health.

As a Harvard Law graduate, she uses her legal expertise to ensure the narratives and frameworks within GMA’s TV series are accurate. She believes that entertainment should also be educational, aiming to create dramas that viewers can learn from while maintaining high standards of business ethics and realism in storytelling.

GMA achieved massive success by identifying audience desires before the viewers even realized them. This led to the introduction of the fantaserye—a genre blending Philippine mythology and fantasy. A prime example is Mulawin, which achieved a record-breaking 48.6% household rating in Mega Manila, proving that local history and culture can be celebrated on a massive scale.

She focuses on teaching future leaders the value of hard work, strict business ethics, and the ability to think creatively beyond conventional boundaries. Her ultimate goal is to foster a sense of pride in Filipino creations, encouraging the next generation to celebrate and export local culture and history to a worldwide audience.
